Position Title: Summer Camp Teacher/Director for GateWay Academy Adventure Camp

 

Open:  March 20, 2017

Close:  April 12, 2017

Classification: Full-time temporary, June 26, 2017 – June 30, 2017; One position to be filled

Eligibility:  Must be a US citizen or permanent legal resident of the United States.  Must successfully complete:

·         Background check

·         Consumer credit check

·         Drug test

·         GateWay Youth Protection and Mentor Trainings

 

Job Location: Harper’s Ferry, West Virginia

Compensation:  $200 per day

Reports To: GateWay Boarding Academy Board Director

Direct Reports: Summer Camp Teacher and Interns

Position Summary

The GateWay Academy Adventure Camp Teacher/Director works collaboratively with the Leadership Staff and Summer Support Staff to lead and manage the implementation of the entire Summer Camp Program.

As an integral part of the management team, this position reports directly to the Board Chairman. The primary responsibility of this position includes; working with the leadership team to cast and execute overall vision of the summer camp, training and leading other temporary summer staff; fostering a culture of excellence in leadership and building long-term relationships with campers and their families.

 

Principle Duties and Job Functions

  • Lead and execute the implementation of the GateWay Academy Adventure Camp
  • Train Camp Staff
  • Develop and maintain relationships with campers, parents and other GateWay Boarding Academy supporters
  • Encourage, facilitate and lead campers in their efforts to develop:
    • Leadership
    • Group Cohesion/Team-building
    • Interpersonal skills
    • Accountability
    • Self-control
  • Participate in the innovation and creation of new programs and new activities

Experience and Qualifications Requirements

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Minimum of three years’ experience in related field
  • Demonstrated ability in operations management and leadership of others
  • A solid understanding of children and youth summer camp programming, principles and their applications
  • Ability to build and nurture trust, partnership and collaboration with campers, parents/guardians, and other Camp staff
  • Conflict resolution and crisis management skills
  • Solid written and verbal communication skills
  • Possess a valid driver’s license and be able to travel within the area when necessary
  • CPR and First Aid Certification or willingness and ability to obtain before start of Camp

 Personal and Professional Characteristics

  • Ability to detect unsafe equipment and actions and to take the appropriate corrective action
  • Ability to exercise patience and diplomacy in dealing with other Camp staff, campers, and parents/guardians
  • A self-starter who is highly motivated and able to work unsupervised for extended periods
  • Ability to handle restricted and confidential information in a professional manner and always protect said information

Position Summary

The GateWay Academy Adventure Camp Intern assists the Summer Camp Teacher in organizing activities for campers, working collaboratively with the Summer Camp Teacher and Director. Builds long-term relationships with campers and their families.

Principle Duties and Job Functions

Assists Camp Teacher in:

  • Explaining the rules of activities and instruct campers at a variety of skill levels
  • Enforcing safety rules to prevent injuries
  • Administering basic first aid, if needed
  • Organizing and setting up the equipment that is used in activities
  • Teaching campers about the local environment, such as area wildlife
  • Encouraging and facilitating campers in their efforts to develop: 
    • Leadership
    • Group Cohesion/Team-building
    • Interpersonal skills
    • Accountability
    • Self-control

Experience and Qualifications Requirements
