Our students are given the opportunity to participate in cultural experiences, activities, and recreation with an emphasis on outdoor adventure.
It is essential for students to understand the importance of leisure in their lives. Many of our students are referred to GateWay Boarding Academy because of the inappropriate way they previously used their leisure time; "Idle hands are the devil's workshop." While at GateWay, they will be given the opportunity to experience new leisure options that will help them replace past choices that may have been inappropriate and self-defeating.
Our goal is to improve the quality of life of our students by exposing them to new activities and experiences and thereby, equip them with appropriate alternatives for using their leisure time.
Visits to plays and museums are but two examples of the type of cultural experiences that will help students identify a wide array of community resources available for their leisure.
Outdoor activities such as campouts, rock climbing, white-water rafting, and skiing, focus on building trust, communication, teamwork and problem solving. Students work individually and collaboratively as a team on tasks that are proven to encourage these traits while also promoting self-confidence.
