Position Title: GateWay READ 180 Teacher

Open:  Until filled

Classification: Part-time, one position to be filled

Eligibility:  Must be a US citizen or permanent legal resident of the United States.  Must successfully complete:

  • Background check including drug screening
  • GateWay Program Training [READ 180/Youth Protection/Employee Code of Conduct]

Job Location: Suitland, Maryland

Compensation:  $20.00/hr.

Reports To: GateWay Boarding Academy President

Direct Reports: GateWay READ 180 Volunteers

Position Summary

GateWay READ 180 Teacher plans and develops lessons following the guidelines of READ 180, a comprehensive reading intervention program for students who currently read below their grade level.  GateWay READ 180 Teachers are responsible for the direct delivery of training and instruction as well as evaluation of the progress of students.    

Principal Duties and Job Functions

  • Prepare and deliver course lesson plans
  • Observe student performance through regular interaction and assessments
  • Evaluate progress toward understanding of material and concepts
  • Prepare and deliver written report on student progress and grades
  • Maintain files
  • Assign tasks to GateWay READ 180 Volunteers
  • Provide supervision of youth during non-instructional class time, e.g., overseeing youth during restroom breaks

Experience and Qualifications Requirements

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Minimum of two years’ experience as an instructor in an academic setting
  • Computer literacy skills
  • Oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to manage competing priorities
  • Ability to build and nurture trust, partnership and collaboration with students, parents/guardians, and other GateWay READ 180 staff and volunteers; previous experience working with youth is a plus
  • Conflict resolution and crisis management skills
  • Possession of a valid driver’s license is a plus

 Personal and Professional Characteristics

  • Ability to exercise patience and diplomacy in dealing with students, parents/guardians, and other GateWay READ 180 staff and volunteers
  • A self-starter who is highly motivated and able to work unsupervised for extended periods
  • Ability to handle restricted and confidential information in a professional manner and always protect said information

Position Summary

GateWay Boarding Academy is seeking a part-time Executive Director, responsible for fulfilling the mission and meeting the objectives of GateWay. The Executive Director will manage the day-to-day operations of GateWay Boarding Academy, with the authority to carry out responsibilities in accordance with the Academy’s direction and policies as established by the Board of Directors.

Principal Duties and Job Functions

Leadership and Management

  • Provides general oversight of all GateWay activities and manages the day-to-day operations.
  • Informs the Board and its committees about trends, issues, problems, and activities.
  • Ensures program quality and organizational stability.
  • Recommends staffing and annual budget to the Board of Directors.
  • Promotes programs and services.

Fundraising and Communications

  • Serves as chief spokesperson for GateWay Boarding Academy.
  • Oversees the fiscal activities of the organization.
  • Oversees implementation of fundraising plans.
  • Generates community involvement.
  • Keeps informed of developments affecting not-for-profit organizations.

Mission Support and Strategic Planning

  • Proposes short- and long-term goals in support of the mission.
  • Identifies and addresses problems and opportunities impacting GateWay.
  • Informs the Board of internal and external factors that may influence GateWay success.

Experience and Qualifications Requirements

  • At least a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university
  • At least 3 years of senior management experience, preferably in not-for-profit management
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to manage competing priorities
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Good negotiating skills
  • Exceptional computer skills
  • Ability to handle and protect restricted and confidential information.
